FanFic Summary & Review Three

CATS

"Based on 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats' and other poems by T.S. Eliot, the musical takes place in a junkyard where the local cats are auditioning to be chosen by their leader, Old Deuteronomy, to journey to the Heavyside Lair to be reborn. In the end, the former glamour cat, Grizabella - turned dishevelled outcast is chosen by Deuteronomy to receive the prized additional life" (Stage Agent, 2011).

“Jellicle cats are each give three names each, one name given by their human owners, one name that is unique and fits only that cat's personality, and one name that is so divine that only the cat knows it and still contemplates over it (The Naming of Cats)” (Musicals Dot Net, 2011).

Who am I and What's Become of Me?Is a Fan fiction prose I read from this site:
http://jelliclejunkyard.wetpaint.com/page/Fan-Fiction and it reads,

What am I thought of? What do you care!
I’m thought of as nothing but me.
You may think that’s good, or that it’s okay,
But when I am me, there is nothing to be.

For although people think, I’m energetic that’s all,
Its not what I am inside,
Because what I show is hyper and sweet,
I know I don’t fit into this Tribe.

I scream and I jump, but do I really care?
Of course not, I’m blank through my mind.
And when catching mice, or seeking for friends,
I’m the only thing I want to find.

My mama don’t know what’s become of me,
She says I need to be more mature,
But I am stuck, cause I’m not kitten nor am I a cat,
Not brave or bold and not that pure.

And now, it’s too late, my time has long passed,
For, when I act not at all girly,
The cats, they all laugh, and then they walk past,
They know that I’m not acting like me.

What do I do then? I curl up and cry.
I watch all cats proudly walk past.
I can’t go to mama, and the toms just ignore.
Why would they want me, Missy-No-Class?

A miserable excuse I am for a cat,
Not stealthy, no moonlight eyes,
I am known as “The Kitten” and whenever I hear it
A small part within me dies.

And so, what to do, don’t look at me,
For now you surely should know,
That I am Etcetera, do you know what that means?
And so on, and so on, and so on….

The voice of Etcetera the Kitten is employed in this piece. Early in the piece Etcetera tells of the human perspective of her nature, in the cat world the author expresses her disconnection from friends and being misunderstood by her Mama. And when she tries to act like a female she’s not taken seriously. Her journey is a coming of age told well through the eyes of this author. Etcetera on her quest to establish her divine name and her place in the Jellicle family. The piece is framed well and stays true to the ideals of the story with regards to the importance of a felines name. I’ve seen the musical on DVD would love to see it in theatre in future.
