Jurassic Park: Evolution
The Five Deaths. That is what locals called the islands Dr. Hammond once inhabited with theme park genetically enginered dinosaurs. 38 years on, and the islands lay somewhat untouched. Some say that the greatest virtue of man is perhaps his curiosity, but in the case of the five islands inhabited by unnatural theme park dinosaurs, perhaps things would have been best left untouched.
Incidents in 2020 and 2022, when a Plesiosaur was spotted on the shores of a Mexican beach, and Pteranadon’s sighted nesting in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain ranges in Western Mexico should have ensured people of the danger of the islands. However, to some it only made them more alluring. But since the incident involving Dr. Alan Grant and the Kirby family on Isla Sorna, not many had yet attempted to return to the islands except for quick scientific purposes or to be sure the islands were secure.
Clear blue sky and crystal clear water. Perfect conditions for a day of sightseeing. The bullet shaped plane took off with ease and with secrecy as it carried its 15 or so passengers for their tour leaving the Central American Pacific Coast. An announcement came through the speakers. The rough voice of a Mexican woman informed the passengers that they would be arriving at Isla Sorna Island shortly and that in the meantime they should enjoy the view from the viewing windows. A girl sat in the back row of the plane looking nervous, twiddling her thumbs.
“Pa, isn’t this place supposed to be bad? Dr. Grant’s book says so. I read it again last night.” She peered down at her book with comfort, blushing. “Chase, for goodness sake. That book was written a long time ago. I did not pay a bloody fortune for you to sit here and complain. Just relax, once the plane connects to the track around the island we’ll be far away from any harm.” He was right, to an extent.
In an attempt to gain revenue from the disastrous Five Deaths Islands, InGen, with new technology, developed a way for people to see the creatures on Isla Sorna, but in a way that kept them safe. Planes had been developed to fly to the island and connect to a track that weaved through Isla Sorna, developed from some of the old systems (although most was higly damaged due to Hurricane Clarissa which was the initial reason the island had to be evacuated.) It was to be like a rollercoaster that would enable the tourists to see the island and leave unharmed by detaching from the track and flying home.
To build the track had not come cheap, and tickets came at a price. The track had to be fully secured with laser fencing and kept far away from the Pteranadon 'birdcage' which had accidently been left open from a previous incident. The whole operation however, had to be kept top secret due to laws against people entering the islands.
Many court cases involving Dr. Alan Grant had finally come to an end in March 2015 stating that no one was to enter the islands without a necessary permit for research (much to the displeasure of Dr. Grant.) The tourist project InGen was undertaking (under a ‘scientific’ permit) was to be the last mistake InGen would ever make.
“Attention passengers. We are about to make our landing on the entrance strip to the Island Isla Sorna. Please ensure that your seatbelt is fastened. We will be entering the island shortly and your tour will begin.” Chase looked to the nervous man across the plane who had caught her attention. He had a kind face, with dark locks of hair. The expression on his face was hard to distinguish. He looked both excited, and with a sense of anger and anticipation.
As the plane lowered, an echoic ‘clink’ was heard as the plane attached itself to the track which had emerged through the bush as they had got closer to their destination. A nervous humming of conversation could be heard from all over the plane. A pompous Arab man (perhaps with a hefty oil inheritance) expressed how the trip was already a, “waste of money” and how, “it’s been an hour and we haven’t seen a damn thing yet.”
“And we won’t be.”
The voice had come from the man with dark hair sitting across the plane from Chase. He stood up and snatched a small silver pistol from his belt and pointed it at the head of the driver’s chair.
“My name is Eric Kirby, head of the department of Law Enforcement and Safety of the Five Deaths Islands. You are under arrest for undertaking an illegal tourist campaign to a restricted area by law. Turn off the engine.”
The plane sat frozen in silence.
The two pilots exchanged a look at each other, then each reached for a weapon of their own and both shot at Kirby. All bullets missed, some shattering the windows, others killing a few of the passengers. The vehicle veered to one side coming off the track. A shot had hit a latch detaching it from the track. Screams were heard from all over. The vehicle sped through the trees and hit the ground with an enormous “THOOMP”.
Groans and muttering were heard after some time. At least some had survived. Not that they had much of a chance. The massive body of a decaying dinosaur lay on the forest floor, bigger than any dinosaur anyone had ever recorded. The worst fears of the scientists were true. The dinosaurs were slowly evolving and growing due to the fast repopulation of the herbivores on the island. They were bigger and stronger than ever.
Chase managed to free herself from the debris after some time, looked up, and screamed.
